About The Japan Filter
What this site is
The Japan Filter looks at products that are well regarded in Japan's domestic market and re-checks them for buyers outside the country.
Being popular in Japan does not automatically make something a good buy abroad. The model sold overseas is often a different unit, the warranty may not apply, and the price gap can be substantial. This site exists to find those gaps before you spend money.
Who publishes it
The Japan Filter is written and published by a sole proprietor operating under the trade name 408Consulting, based in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.
Reading Japanese retail listings, manufacturer specification sheets, and domestic review data is ordinary daily activity here, not a research trip. That is the reason this site can exist: most of the source material is in Japanese and never gets translated.
What we do
- -- Compare the Japanese-market model against the version sold on Amazon.com, specification by specification
- -- Read manufacturer documentation in Japanese for warranty terms, country of manufacture, and model differences
- -- Use Japanese domestic retail and review data for context that US listings leave out
- -- Confirm a product is genuinely available through official US channels before recommending it
What we do not do
We are not a testing lab. We do not buy, use, or physically test the products covered here, and no guide on this site will claim that we did.
Every guide includes a section called "How We Researched This Guide" stating exactly what its conclusions rest on. Where a claim comes from a manufacturer's own documentation rather than independent evidence, we say so in the guide.
We would rather tell you what we actually know than imply more.
Not every verdict is a recommendation
Some guides conclude that a product is not worth buying, or not worth buying from outside Japan. When that happens we say so directly and point to an alternative. A site that recommends everything is not filtering anything.
How this site makes money
The Japan Filter participates in the Amazon Associates Program and earns commission on qualifying purchases made through links on this site. This costs you nothing extra.
It does not affect our conclusions. We have no relationship with any brand covered here, receive no products from them, and are not paid by them.
Corrections
Specifications change, models get discontinued, and we make mistakes. If you find something wrong, write to hello@thejapanfilter.com and we will correct it.
